Barbara Schlichtman helps clients prepare for life events by designing estate plans that help clients retain control and carry out their wishes. Her practice areas focus on preparing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and trust and estate administration. She focuses on organizing clients’ plans so that the clients are confident that their estate plans reflect their wishes.
Focusing on quality of life is important to Ms. Schlichtman’s practice. She develops collaborative relationships with her clients, as well as their financial advisors and other professionals to craft plans that meet the individual’s needs and provide security. Ms. Schlichtman also places a high priority on being available when crisis occurs. She is very comfortable helping families deal with issues such as dementia, mental illness and developmental disabilities.
Ms. Schlichtman is a shareholder with Perkins Thompson. Her previous firm, Maine Center for Elder Law, merged with Perkins Thompson in 2019. She and her colleagues continue to offer elder law services that include pre-planning and crisis planning for transfers to nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
Barbara is on the executive committee for Legal Services for the Elderly in Maine, the Maine Justice Action Group, and a member of the Academy of Special Needs Planners. She also teaches elder law as adjunct faculty at University of Maine School of Law.
